Flip and Fold Corners Tutorial

Flip and Fold Corners

Flip and Fold Corners are used to make many types of 45° angles in quilt blocks and components.

Some examples of quilt blocks and quilt components which use the Flip and Fold Corner technique are Single Flying Geese, Square-in-a-Square, Trapezoid, and binding strips.

Math:

  1. Determine the size of the base unit, i.e. the piece you will be sewing the Flip and Fold onto. In a Single Flying Geese, this would be the rectangle.
  2. Determine the size of the Flip and Fold Corner piece. In a Single Flying Geese, this would be the square.
  3. It may be helpful to draw out your pieces at full scale and then measure them. Remember if you are measuring the finished (already sewn in) size of the pieces, you will need to add ½" to each measurement for the seam allowances.
Sewing Instructions:

  1. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the Flip and Fold Corner piece.
  2. Lay this piece onto the correct corner of the base unit, right sides together.
  3. Before you sew, fold the corner piece open along the line you drew to ensure you have it positioned correctly
  4. If it is positioned correctly, fold the piece flat again, and sew on the line.
  5. Before you cut off the excess seam allowance, fold the corner open again to be sure it is positioned correctly. If you don’t discover an error until after you make any cuts, you will have to start over with new pieces of fabric.
    1. If it is incorrect, unpick the seam and try again.
    2. If it is correct, fold the piece flat again, and cut away the excess seam allowance ¼" away from the seam
  6. Press the corner open and press the seam allowances to one side.
